What changed
The latest results provide a completed quarter against which to judge the next outlook. They also prevent a common comparison mistake: treating a forecast as if it were an achieved result. The figures below use the same revenue currency and the same margin definitions for both quarters.[T1] [T2]
| Metric | Q3 2026 actual | Q4 2026 guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue, US$ billions | 46.72 | 52.3–54.3 |
| Gross margin | 66.4% | 65%–67% |
| Operating margin | 58.7% | 56.5%–58.5% |

Why the gap matters
Our interpretation
A revenue forecast tells you about the expected size of the business. A margin forecast tells you how much of that business may become profit at a particular level of the income statement. Neither should substitute for the other. If sales expand while the operating margin eases, investors should ask what is changing in the cost base, rather than assume that every additional dollar carries the previous quarter’s economics.
Gross margin and operating margin also answer different questions. The gross-margin range overlaps the reported quarter; the operating-margin range does not. That distinction is a reason to examine the next results more closely. It is not evidence, by itself, of a specific cost problem or a permanent decline.[T2]
The strongest counterargument
A slightly lower margin can coexist with a larger pool of profit when the revenue base is bigger. It would be too pessimistic to treat the margin range alone as a sign that the business is shrinking. Equally, it would be too optimistic to turn the top end of sales guidance into a promise.
This announcement does not establish whether the shares are cheap. A valuation judgment would need a verified share price, an earnings framework and an explicit view of future performance. This article makes no buy or sell call.
What to watch next
TSMC’s calendar lists October monthly sales for November 10, 2026, with dates subject to change. That release can offer an early check on revenue progress; monthly sales alone will not settle the margin question.[T3]
The useful takeaway: separate the size of the opportunity from the economics of delivering it. For another view of that distinction, read our analysis of Microsoft’s custom-chip plans.
